Artist Statement
I create moments of intimate yet theatrical performance to explore and examine life. I feel the need to slow things down, work through them, and arrive at well-considered conclusions. With a background in classical ballet, biology, and art history, I compose works using the elements of who I am, what I love, and what I seek to understand. Key aspects of my practice include repetition, structure, and storytelling. My works carry the personal performance and voice I developed as a dancer, blending bodily intuition with the quiet observation I’ve gained from the natural world. These sensibilities guide my practice into a process of layered transformation involving both paint and the physical panels, creating a record of introspection.
Much like a choreographer who repeats a sequence until it becomes second nature, I build my compositions through rhythm and repetition. I assign roles to my curated figures within vibrant, layered scenes created from small, deliberate gestures and expansive motifs. As I spend time with each subject, the image evolves, and so do I. As I change, so must the canvas. Hand-cut painted plywood panels shift and inform the rhythm as they move within or around my space. As objects, they are a movable aspect of my practice, often in flux until they find their place within a work. My process is slow and meditative, allowing me to process the world’s heaviness in increments. This approach gives me the space to confront personal and collective struggles that shape my life. These experiences form an emotional undercurrent that has manifested physically as a bright red hue seeping into every series of works, transforming the act of painting into a dialogue between myself and the world.
What was once performance as an act of escape has now become an act of exposure. I consider my paintings as stages that hold space for complexity. In curating each scene, I aim to enchant the viewer while also inviting reflection and stillness. The theatricality remains but is tempered by honesty. Ultimately, I seek to convey the balance of wonder and reality that I find in nature, storytelling, and human experience. Through my evolving practice, I hope to invite others into that tender space where observation becomes understanding, and where performance transforms into truth.
